Abstract The seeds of Lactuca sativa L. (Asteraceae) are regarded as an anodyne, galactagogue, demulcent, emollient and used to treat bronchitis, asthma and whooping cough. Phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract of the seeds of L. sativa led to isolation of phytoconstituents characterized as glyceryl-1,2-dioleiyl-3-phosphate (1), glyceryl-1-octadec-9ʹ-enoate-3-phosphate (2), glyceryl-1-octadec-9ʹ-enoate-2-hexadecanoate-3-phosphate (3), glyceryl-1-octadec-9ʹ-enoate-2-octadecanoate-3-phosphate (4) and β-sitosterol (5). The structures of all the isolated phytoconstituents have been estabilished on the basis of spectral data analysis and chemical reactions.
